The rise of collab houses

Collab houses such as the famous Team 10 mansion and the Hype House are created to bring young influencers together and place them all under one roof. The goal is a collaboration between creators to boost creative potential and output. These houses come mainly from a new breed of youtube influencers and Tik Tokers who want to make quality content and work together to build an even bigger fanbase.

Collab houses have been around for a few years now. It started in 2014, when a group of YouTube stars who called themselves 'Our Second Life', moved into a mansion together which they called the '02L Mansion'.

While they aren't brand new, the newest edition is The Hype House in LA which houses 19 young Tik Tok stars who all collaborate to produce 15-second videos, 4 of those live there full time whilst the others visit daily to create new content. After posting pictures on Instagram of their first group appearance, the hashtag #hypehouse started trending within minutes. In a few short weeks, the group’s videos earned more than 100 million views on Tik Tok.

The member's ability to work together amplifies their potential reach meaning they gain thousands or even million followers across multiple social media platforms. When two or more creators work together it helps them to cross-promote each other's content which adds to their fan bases.

“It’s a brilliant move for power players on these platforms to lift each other up,” said Sam Sheffer, a YouTuber and technologist. “‘Elevate others to elevate yourself’ is a saying, and it really rings true with this new generation of TikTokers.”

“From a management perspective, it’s great,” he added. “It just means all the kids will focus on content.”

For a collab house, it isn't as easy as just picking the biggest mansion in LA, it's about finding the right location. 'A good collab house has lots of natural light, open space, and is far from prying neighbors. A gated community is ideal, to prevent swarms of fans from showing up.'

Brent Rivera, a YouTube star, said the perfect collab house “needs to be big, and the more amenities the better, like a pool, nice bathroom, nice lighting, big back, and front yard, room for activities and fun stuff you can do inside or outside.”

If you thought about a bunch of 18 ish-year-olds living together in a big house with no parents, you would instantly think that it would be a crazy party house but its actually the opposite in the Hype House. The house has strict rules, it is not a party house. If you break something, you have 15 days to replace it. And if you want to be a part of the group, you need to churn out content daily.

"If someone slips up constantly, they’ll not be a part of this team anymore. You can’t come and stay with us for a week and not make any videos, it’s not going to work. This whole house is designed for productivity. If you want to party, there are hundreds of houses that throw parties in L.A. every weekend. We don’t want to be that. It’s not in line with anyone in this house’s brand. This house is about creating something big, and you can’t do that if you’re going out on the weekends.”
